The Breed / History
The Maine Coon’s exact origins are a mix of fact and legend, but they’re definitely one of the oldest natural breeds in North America.

One popular story is that they are the result of crosses between domestic cats and raccoons, which isn’t genetically possible but a fun tale! It’s more likely they came about from domestic cats mixing with longhaired breeds brought over by sailors. They were well-established in New England by the mid-19th century and were popular competitors in early cat shows.
The Breed

Maine Coons are known for their large size and sociable personalities. They’re often called “gentle giants” because they are friendly and good with families.

They have semi-long, water-resistant fur and a bushy tail to help them stay warm in cold weather. Maine Coons are also known for their tufted ears and paws, which give them a distinctive look. Plus, they’re super smart and playful!
